1927 Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Signed Baseball. True to the Boy Scouts motto, young Dick Theis was prepared when his Iowa scouting troop set out on the trip of a lifetime during the summer of 1927, a journey from his Burlington hometown through the Midwest with stops at Abraham Lincoln's birthplace in Springfield, Illinois and Sportsman's Park in the City of St. Louis. The troop traveled in the bed of an open truck, and we have images of the kids peering out over the railing adorned with signage reading "We're from Burlington on the Mississippi," and "Boy Scouts of America, St. John's Troop 3," one such image printed on the front page of the Burlington Hawk Eye newspaper's "Lifestyles" section. Theis and the trip to see the Yankees/Browns game are each mentioned within the accompanying article. But our favorite image is an original snapshot of the Babe at the railing of the ballpark, penning his autograph on the presented ball young Dick had carried with him for that very purpose.

Ruth's sweet spot signature rates a conservative 8/10 on this "Rawlings Special League" sphere, with Gehrig's equally bold offering appearing on the eastern panel. The only other writing on the ball is an "R.T." (for "Richard Theis") notation inked well clear of the autographs. The spectacular provenance, ideal Murderer's Row vintage and remarkable condition makes this one of the most appealing Ruth/Gehrig duo balls we've encountered, and we expect competition for its ownership will be intense. A 1927 Ruth and Gehrig baseball signed for a Boy Scout--what could be more American than that? Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
