    The Jim Barnes Collection

Born in Cornwall, England in 1886, Barnes got his start as a caddy and club maker's apprentice in his youth, but his aptitude for the playing of the sport quickly became apparent and by the age of twenty he had declared his professional status. His towering six-foot four inch height earned him the nickname "Long Jim," and he used his lanky build to great effect, earning a reputation as the longest driver in the sport. Barnes earned four Major Championships during his career, including the first ever playing of the PGA Championship in 1916. The great Bobby Jones credits Barnes with teaching him the most important lesson of his career, recalling the advice, "Bobby, you can't always be playing well when it counts. You'll never win golf tournaments until you learn how to score well when you're playing badly." But on the pages that follow, you'll encounter the results of playing well, a fascinating assortment of relics from Barnes' storied career. All make their hobby debut within this Signature Auction, consigned by the Barnes family with their letter of provenance for each lot.
