    Description

1920's Walter Johnson Signed Studio Portrait Photograph. In 1917, a Connecticut arms laboratory recorded Johnson's fastball at 134 feet per second, equal to ninety-nine miles per hour, a speed the lanky farmboy was somehow able to generate with a smooth sidearmed motion that baffled and terrified opposing batters. New York Highlanders outfielder Birdie Cree provided his own methodology for handling Johnson's speed: "When you see the arm start forward, swing." Presented is a magnificent sepia portrait photograph from the "Harris & Ewing" studio in the Big Train's adopted hometown of Washington, DC. He inscribes the photo to a noted early autograph collector, "For Edgar A. Moss, Best Wishes, Walter Johnson." The black fountain pen ink competes somewhat against the dark background, but rates a technical 9/10 in strength. The 5x7" photo and 8x10" cardboard mount that houses it are NRMT-MT. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
