The newly-minted Yankee comes to the silver screen

1920 Babe Ruth Signed Tex Rickard "Headin' Home" Card, PSA/DNA Mint 9. The mythology of the game's greatest figure got a Ruthian boost from this silent film based upon a screenplay by Arthur "Bugs" Baer, a noted sports journalist and syndicated columnist for William Randolph Hearst publications. Ruth played a fictionalized version of himself in the movie, raised in a loving home in the country rather than the Baltimore reformatory where he learned the sport of baseball, fashioning his own bat from a chopped-down tree in a manner reminiscent of the film "The Natural" that would debut sixty-four years later.

The rare few examples of this promotional piece have been characterized alternately as a "ticket" in past sales, and it's not difficult to see why. The verso of the 2x3" card stock relic announces,

"Here he is, Babe Ruth, Colossus of the swat, The home run king in a gripping base ball storm, 'Headin Home,' Sidney Lust's Leader Theatre, First showing in Washington, One week only, Starting Sunday, May 8 at 3 P.M."

The absence of any price tag or admission language suggests this was not a ticket, but it is not impossible that it may have been used as such. We can assert with certainty, however, that this rare artifact serves as one of the earliest Ruth signed trading cards in the hobby.

That autograph, in the Babe's classic early quotation-marked format, is virtually unchanged from its encounter with the film's leading man, a black fountain pen application assessed at a "Mint 9" level by the experts at PSA/DNA (who characterize the piece as a "Ticket.") Some ink transfer from the card that was once stacked on top of this one appears on the image, but does nothing to diminish the strength of the signature. Mild edge and corner wear is reported, but there are no creases, tears or other condition issues of any significance to mention. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Mint 9.
