    Description

1917 Cap Anson Signed "Cap Anson & Daughters" Contract. Named after two Michigan towns that his father was fond of, Adrian Constantine Anson was baseball's first superstar, the inaugural member of the 3,000-hit club, and one of the few men in history to win a championship in more than one sport (baseball and bowling).

Despite his prodigious successes on the baseball diamond, Cap Anson suffered financial and personal hardships in the last decade of his life, declaring bankruptcy and losing his home and his wife. He turned down a $50,000 testimonial benefit from the Chicago Colts, a pension from the National League, and other offers of financial assistance because he felt it was humiliating. In his last years he survived by performing vaudeville skits (one was even written for him by Ring Lardner) with his daughters, Adele and Dorothy.

The 1917 "Orphuem Circuit" contract on offer here is for a "Comedy Variety Skit known and billed as Capt. Anson & Daughters" for which the trio would be paid $380 for fourteen performances over the course of one week. Signed "Capt. Anson and Daughters" in 9/10 fountain pen ink by the Hall of Famer. The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
