1912 Christy Mathewson Signed "Pitching in a Pinch" First Edition Book. Just four days after the legendary New York Giants pitcher applied his autograph to the first blank page of the presented volume, he would record the 300th victory of his Hall of Fame career at the Polo Grounds with a three to two tally over the visiting Chicago Cubs. It would prove to be the eleventh of Matty's twenty-three wins in 1912, a brilliant campaign that helped propel the Giants to its second of three consecutive National League flags.

Thirteen years later, the beloved hurler would succumb to the respiratory ailments that had plagued him ever since his accidental exposure to mustard gas during World War I training exercises, leaving the future collecting hobby woefully lacking in autographed material. Matty's finest specimens tend to be those applied to the books he authored during his life, and we see evidence of that fact here, his elegantly scripted signature and "June 9 1912" notation projecting with 9/10 boldness over a century after its application.

The volume itself likewise survives with few indicators of its long life, short of the standard absence of the original dust jacket. Minor edge and corner wear to the cover accounts for the entirety of condition caveats. A marvelous memento of the number three man on the Major Leagues' all-time victories roster. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
