1911 Honus Wagner Signed Typed Letter. He is legendary in American culture for his shortprinted 1909-11 T206 Tobacco card, but Honus Wagner was also one of the greatest players of the 20th Century. Finishing with 3,420 hits and 723 stolen bases, "The Flying Dutchman" also sports a career batting average of .328. It was an easy decision to vote the man into the Hall of Fame in the inaugural 1936 class, along with Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson.

In this auction a lucky bidder will be able to own an early Wagner signature on a letter with baseball-related content. Typed on Pittsburgh Athletic Company ("Operating the Pittsburgh Base Ball Club") letterhead, and dated June 1st, 1911, the note was sent to Mr. T.J. Lynch, President of the National League. Wagner write that, "When Doyle called Hunter out at third-base last Saturday (the point in dispute) I also said to Doyle - 'Why did you call that man out. He wasn't out.' And Doyle answered - "Well, he is out according to the rule in the Book." One wonders if Wagner was able to persuade Lynch to overturn the decision. Wagner's signature is presented in beautifully flowing 9/10 ink. One very tiny brown dot appears after the "H" but does nothing to distract from this immaculate example. The paper is standard 8.5x11" with two horizontal folds and two staple holes. Easily one of the finest examples extant of an early "John H. Wagner" signature. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
