Description
1911 George Wright Signed Book Dedication. On April 22, 1876, George Wright became the first batter in National League history, serving as the Boston Red Caps' lead-off man and grounding out to the shortstop of the Philadelphia Athletics. Thirty-five years later, this Hall of Fame baseball pioneer made a gift of this hardcover edition of The National Game to an admirer, writing on a small (3x4.5") sheet affixed to an opening blank page, "Please accept this book as a reminder of 'Old Time Days' with a Happy New Year, Yours Very Truly, Geo. Wright, Jan 2nd, 1911." The black fountain pen ink remains wonderfully bold almost a century later, rating a legitimate 9/10 in strength. A column of toning affecting the dedication results from decades pressed against a yellowing newspaper column glued to the facing page recounting Wright's visit to Houston, Texas that gave birth to this treasure. The book itself shows some slight loosening of the binding and an expected degree of wear to the covers and spine, but nothing that troubles the all-important autograph. A tough and essential autograph for the avid baseball historian, provided with the finest provenance one could imagine for a signature of this vintage. LOA from PSA/DNA.
