1910-87 Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Mickey Mantle & More Signed Cuts Lot of 79. Offered here is a fascinating lot that obviously took great time to put together. There are eighty-nine signed cuts of major league stars from 1910 through the 1980's, most of them affixed to period cards of the players. The vast majority are 1950's and earlier, plus a batch of 1960 Fleer Baseball Greats featuring older Hall of Famers. It would be a shame to disassemble the collection so we are offering it as one large lot to a lucky bidder. While there is something to be said for keeping the collection as is, there are also opportunities here to remove the cuts from the cards and mat and frame them with period photographs.

The highlight of the collection is the March 17th, 1910 M101-2 Sporting News Supplement with signatures of Ty Cobb (8/10) and Honus Wagner (9/10 but covered with a piece of tape). This supplement itself typically sells for over $1,000 without the autographs, although this example has been slightly trimmed down to fit in an album page. Some other highlights include Jackie Robinson (1953 Topps, 7/10, tape), and Satchel Paige (1953 Topps, 8/10).

One of the sets heavily represented is the 1960 Fleer Baseball Greats set, featuring the top players of the early 1900's. Players included are Cy Young, Mickey Cochrane, George Sisler, Waite Hoyt, Carl Hubbell, Connie Mack, Chief Bender, Jimmie Foxx, Nap Lajoie, Lou Boudreau, Ed Walsh, Joe Medwick, Al Simmons, Charles Gehringer, Luke Appling, Red Ruffing and Bing Miller. Most range in the 6-9 range, many with tape over the signatures. Mack grades a 9/10, Lajoie a 5/10, Foxx and Cy Young are 7/10.

A few non-card mediums are included, such as a real photo postcard of Tris Speaker (8/10), and modern cachets of Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Don Drysdale, Willie McCovey and Ray Dandridge. Other small photographs (3.5x5.5") and postcards includeRay Boone, Steve O'Neill, Dale Mitchell, Fred Lindstrom, Nippy Jones, Luke Easter and one other.

Additional cuts affixed to cards include Warren Spahn, Al Rosen, Gil Hodges, Eddie Mathews, Stan Musial, Ferris Fain, Ned Garver, Ralph Kiner, Bob Feller, Bobo Newsom, Charlie Keller, Frank Crosetti, Ted Kluszewski, Bob Lemon, Bob Turley, Duke Snider, Jackie Jensen, Wally Moon, Walt Alston, Brooks Robinson, Harmon Killebrew, Billy Herman, Willie Stargell, and Vern Stephens. Most are in the range of 5-10, with the majority being about 7/10. Stephens, Garver, and Gil Hodges have faded to be barely visible.

The remainder are signed cuts, unaffixed to any medium. While there is a Shoeless Joe Jackson signature, it is a secretarial example signed by his wife. Others include Johnny Sain, Bill Goodman, Stan Musial, Bucky Walters, Jim Konstanty, Bill Chapman, Dom DiMaggio, Bucky Harris, Jimmie Dykes, Charlie Root, Joe DiMaggio, Terry Moore, Red Rolfe and Earle Combs. These are primarily 7-9 autographs, with the Bucky Harris rating a 4/10.

In addition, there are three unsigned cards in the lot, including a 1926 W512 Ty Cobb with typing on the reverse. All in all, this amazing lot serves as a signed history of baseball in the early 20th century, and demonstrates the generosity of through-the-mail signers decades ago. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
