    Description

1896 Barney Dreyfuss Handwritten Signed Letter. The 2008 Hall of Fame inductee is best remembered today as the former owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, builder of Forbes Field, and the founder of the World Series, the sport's most celebrated contest. Here he writes on the letterhead of The Louisville Base Ball Company just a year before his club secretary Harry Clay Pulliam convinced him to take a chance on an awkward looking shortstop by the name of Honus Wagner. His gorgeous calligraphic script addresses player Ed Boyle, who would go hitless in the fourteen at bats of his professional career. Ironically, Dreyfuss closes, "Trust to see you here in course of this week and wishing you much success in the Big League and in our Club. I am, Truly Yours, Barney Dreyfuss, Secty & Treasr." All ink is 9/10 or better, and professional restoration has removed ancient tape and repaired the fold line tears it once supported. Some water staining at right edge causes no concern, and given the tremendous scarcity and importance of Dreyfuss material, any condition flaws must be entirely forgiven. Original mailing envelope, completed in Dreyfuss' hand but unsigned, is included. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
