    Description

1879 Alexander Cartwright Signed Receipt. Although arguments still ensue over who exactly is the father of American baseball, certainly Alexander Cartwright is worthy of considerable respect. He is believed to have drawn the first diagram of a baseball diamond and the rules he developed went on to become the basic rules of the modern game. His first organized team was an 1842 Knickerbocker Fire Engine Company club, although it would take a few more years of tinkering with the rules before the first organized game occurred in 1846.

One of the most difficult of all baseball HOF autographs to acquire, Cartwright passed away in 1892 prior to the time when ballplayers would be asked for signatures. Thus, it is on items like the offered receipt that most Cartwright signatures are found on. This particular receipt is on official "A.J. Cartwright" receipt sheet, signed on the top in stunning 9/10 fountain pen, and made out to M. Paiko of the Paiko Estate which Cartwright partially managed. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
