1948 Borg-Warner Trophy Presented to Mauri Rose for Indianapolis 500 Victory. One of the most thoughtful and iconoclastic drivers ever to take the checkered flag, Rose was an auto engineer for General Motors who never missed a day of work to advance his auto racing "hobby," and considered his proudest accomplishment to be not his three Indy victories, but rather the invention of a device that allowed amputees to drive an automobile. A fifteen-race veteran of the Brickyard, the 1994 International Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee was known to leave Indianapolis immediately after qualifying and return only shortly before race day, skipping customary practice runs and mechanical preparation. While Rose would insist his dedication to his "nine-to-five job" was the reason for this unconventional behavior, friends often suggested it was the sting of anti-semitism from fellow drivers and their crews which limited Rose's time at the track.What Rose may have lacked in preparation he more than made up for with natural ability, thrice claiming top honors in auto racing's most prestigious event. Here we feature the award presented to Rose for that third and final Indy victory, one in which he established an Indy 500-best four hour and ten minute time in Lou Moore's Offenhauser-powered Deidt race car. It is one of just a handful of Indianapolis 500 winner's trophies ever to surface on the auction block, and arguably the most noteworthy.
Crafted from heavy bronze on a polished wood plaque, the design announces, "Borg-Warner Trophy, The Indianapolis 500 Mile Race," text which is repeated on the trophy cup just below. On the base of the cup is a charming little sculpted head of the winning driver above engraved lettering which reads "Mauri Rose, 1948, 119.814 M.P.H." The prestigious award exhibits a degree of handling wear expected from over six decades of existence but still displays wonderfully. Dimensions are 11x25".
The trophy has remained in the Rose family since it was presented to Mauri and was consigned directly to Heritage. A letter of provenance from the family will accompany the lot.
