Description

1945-46 Caramelo Deportivo Ray Dandridge "Rookie" #25 PSA VG 3. Graded VG 3 by PSA, one of three at this grade with none graded higher. Ray Dandridge was one of the finest fielders and hitters to ever play baseball but never played one game in the Major Leagues. A victim of racial segregation, Dandridge's career lasted from 1933-1949 playing for both the Negro Leagues and in Mexico. Although his talents would have been enough to warrant a call to the majors even after 14 years, it was not to happen for Dandridge who would spend the final years of his career playing or managing for the New York Cubans or Triple-A clubs. In 1949, he lead the American Association in batting (.362 average) and fielding percentage. Even in his final season (1955) where most players generate only modest statistics, Ray batted an amazing .360. Dandridge retired with a .355 lifetime batting average. He was inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1987. His fielding ability was such that his peers have said he never made more than two errors in a season. All from a man who never was allowed to play Major League Baseball. Dandridge only appears in two sets. Only the Caramelo Deportivo series from 1945-46 and 1946-47 have included him. This 1945 "rookie" card has the characteristics of a typical VG card, some corner wear and a few slight wrinkles. The image is clean and offers good visual appeal. A very solid entry for any hobbyists specializing in rookie cards, hall of famers or the Negro Leagues.
