Massive oil on board is sixteen square feet!

1982 "Finish at Indy" Original Painting by LeRoy Neiman. Drama? Have a look. You're seeing the actual margin of victory as Gordon Johncock in the number "20" car crossed the line, just 0.16 seconds ahead of Rick Mears, the closest finish at the Brickyard until that date. It would be Johncock's second and final victory in America's most celebrated open wheel race. Mears would end his career as one of three drivers to win four times at Indy, a car-length short of standing alone as the only five-timer.

The kinetic force of Neiman's celebrated expressionistic style perfectly suits the pulse-pounding excitement of the moment, and establishes this as one of our favorites among the works we've handed from the world's most celebrated sports artist. This is likewise the first we've handled with an auto racing theme, so we expect that those collectors with an interest in high-octane competition will come out in force to compete for ownership.

The work is executed on thick board measuring 48x48" in size, and is signed and dated at lower right. The museum quality frame expands the final dimensions to 57x57". Condition is spectacular, with a small chip to the right edge of the frame the only fault worthy of note. We are told that our consignor purchased the work in September 2014 at Franklin Bowles Galleries in San Francisco.
