    Description

1978 Steve Cauthen Silks Worn in Belmont Stakes Victory on Affirmed. As had been the case in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes that preceded it, the Belmont Stakes would prove to be a two-horse contest, each a Hall of Fame thoroughbred ridden by a Hall of Fame jockey. The margin of victory over Alydar and Jorge Velasquez would shrink with each meeting, from a length and a half at Churchill Downs to a neck at Pimlico, and ultimately just a head in the final sprint for the glory of the Triple Crown at Belmont.

We'll let jockey Roger Velez' included letter of provenance pick up the story from there:

"This letter serves as absolute authentication of the silks worn by my longtime friend, Steve Cauthen, in the 1978 Belmont Stakes aboard Affirmed, completing the historic sweep of that year's Triple Crown. I acquired the silks shortly after the race. I was in the jocks' room that day, and Stevie was in a hurry because he had to ride in the race after the Belmont and had to change colors for that race. He handed me the silks that he wore on Affirmed, and I put them in my locker. I took them home, and sometime after that, I gave them to my mother for safe keeping...Recently my mom passed, and when my sister was going through her belongings, she found them and sent them to me. I called Stevie and asked if he would sign them. He said of course, and he did."

The diminutive pink silk top with black and white striped sleeves perfectly matches footage from that dramatic June 10, 1978 race, with light staining at front tail which may or may not be race-related. Interior rear tail bears handwritten "Harbor View" notation, that being the name of the farm where Affirmed was raised and stabled. Interior collar holds label for "Jockey Valet Service," not far from the Belmont track. Upper left chest provides the aforementioned Cauthen signature, a perfect 10/10 in black sharpie. Letter of provenance from Roger Velez. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
