1958 Alifabolaget Pele #635 Rookie PSA NM-MT+ 8.5. The Swedish trading card manufacturer Alifabolaget made its first print run in 1949, but the offered specimen is far and away the most famous and desirable to roll off its presses. The timing is rather stunning, as this card was printed in 1958 when a seventeen-year old phenom led his Brazilian national team to World Cup glory over host nation Sweden, an event that was effectively Pele's introduction to the global audience that holds him in the highest reverence to this day. The youngster's brilliance on the sport's brightest stage inspired a vast array of European clubs to desperately seek his service, leading the Brazilian government to take the countermeasure of declaring Pele "an official national treasure" in order to prevent his transfer from the country.

Just as Pele remains the most celebrated figure of the planet's most popular sport, this particular card is all but universally considered the definitive rookie, thus soccer/football's most important trading card, period. The diminutive slab of cardboard finds the baby-faced legend on the rise wearing his Santos kit above his four-letter identifier. Verso holds a Swedish language bio.

It's been two years since we've encountered an example of similar quality, our November 2018 sale drawing a $57,000 winning bid for a PSA Mint 9 representation, and the market has been churning upwards in the interim. The card is as pretty as its grade suggests, with only the slightest hints of handling apparent under magnification. Only five superior examples appear on the PSA population rankings.
