Even in high grade, the 1951 Bowman Willie Mays rookie often pushes the limits on acceptable centering in each numerical category. Furthermore, due to the design of the issue, slight shifts in either direction can make a card that is technically acceptable for the grade appear worse than it actually is. This example, however, is the exception to the rule. In addition to its fine centering, the card's colors are noticeably bright. Perhaps even more importantly, this rookie card is free from any distracting print defects near the legend's image or in the light background surrounding Mays. The overall aesthetics of this card are unusual in the most positive way, and they place it in exclusive company.
