    Description

1865 "H. Hardwood & Sons Manufacturer's of Base Balls" Letter. In 1858, Harrison Hardwood founded Hardwood & Sons, the first company to manufacture baseballs. They invented the winding machine and designed the "figure eight" ball in 1872, which made the "lemon peel" ball obsolete and is still being used today. By 1875, Hardwood baseballs were the official baseballs of the professional leagues. This one-page letter from 1865 (which pre-dates the establishment of the National League) is penned on spectacular "H. Hardwood & Sons. Manufacturers of Base Balls" company letterhead and features a delightful image of gloveless player about to throw a baseball.
