Description

Only a single superior example appears in the combined populations of SGC & PSA!

1949 Bowman Jackie Robinson #50 SGC Mint+ 9.5. Though the brave Robinson battled through the harshest adversity ever faced by a Major League player in winning the 1947 Rookie of the Year Award, his first great season (and arguably his greatest ever) would be posted two years later in 1949. In the spring of that year, the second baseman came under the tutelage of Hall of Famer George Sisler, who taught Jackie to anticipate the fastball when at the plate, and then simply adjust for breaking pitches. The results were striking. Robinson's batting average jumped forty-six points to a National League-best .342. His ratio of walks to strikeouts more than doubled, and he added thirty-nine RBI's to his 1948 total, which, along with his League-leading thirty-seven stolen bases, earned him the 1949 Most Valuable Player Award.

So Robinson had every reason to smile big on this beautiful Bowman issued at his Hall of Fame zenith, a card that stands alone at its SGC Mint+ 9.5 stature with just one SGC Gem Mint 10 specimen above. The PSA population tops out at Mint 9, so the subject card can be rightfully considered the second-finest example on the planet.

The issue gained fame and an enormous collecting fanbase for its fearless application of color, and here we see that trait in its fullest effect, each layer perfectly registered and bold to the point of radioactivity. The original printing sheet was sliced with an equivalent attention to detail, leaving us with unimprovable centering and corners sharp as razors. Surfaces are entirely immune to the twin plagues of wax and gum stains. We can't imagine what the sole superior example could have that this one does not. It's unquestionably one of the most impressive and important condition-rarities that Heritage has been privileged to present.

Auction Type
Signature Internet Extended Bid: These Auctions are presented via catalog and online. Bidding is taken through our website or via phone. There are two phases of bidding during this type of auction: 1) Normal bidding: Bids are taken up until 10 PM CT the night the auction closes. 2) 30 Minute Ending: On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding). If you are the only bidder at 10 PM, you will automatically win the lot at 10:30. Important: After normal bidding ends, you must be signed-on to the Heritage site to see the bidding option on lots where you qualify for extended bidding and you must be on an individual lot page to reflect the accurate time remaining for that particular lot.
