1920 George Sisler Game-Used Bat from Record-Setting Season PSA/DNA GU 10.
Best-In-Class Expert Analysis/Summary:
In 1920, George Sisler set the Major League record for hits in a single season, finishing with 257 in 154 games for the St. Louis Browns. That record stood for several decades until being broken in 2004 by Ichiro Suzuki in 161 games played. Sisler would also lead the league with a .407 batting average and 399 total bases that same season. Louisville Slugger selected this exact bat to be part of a well-known traveling display, where the company used roughly 20 or so significant bats to help promote the brand across the country. Each one had a small label affixed to the barrel, detailing the importance of the bat and any related history.
In this case, the well-known bat manufacturer selected this heavily used Sisler bat because of its historical importance after he set the single-season hits record. The label, which is entirely intact and legible, confirms that this bat was used to reach hit number 257 of the 1920 season. While there is an inaccuracy on the label regarding the type of hit that brought Sisler's total to 257 (it refers to a home run), we have no doubt it is the record-setting gamer since the company was known for securing bats from players once history was made. Only a handful of examples connected to this mobile baseball museum are known at this time, even though the traveling display program continued for many years. The combination of historical importance and connection to Louisville Slugger make this ultimate Sisler bat.
