1968 Topps 3-D Baseball Uncut Sheet of 9.
Updated condition report: Please note that our cataloger inadvertently failed to report a thin crease that passes horizontally through the lower half inch of the sheet's center cards. There is no effect upon the cards in the upper or lower rows.
One of the true rarities of the modern card era, the 1968 Topps 3-D test issue is among the most sought after and valuable sets from any decade. These attractive cards are extremely rare, produced in miniscule numbers as a test issue that was only distributed to a select few candy stores within walking distance to the Topps Company headquarters. Originally owned by an ex-employee of the Texas based company Xograph, which was contracted by Topps for the production of these high-tech cards, this uncut sheet and the one that precedes it are believed to be the only known examples to the hobby. Xograph would later go on to produce the popular Kellogg's 3-D sets. It is widely believed that all the discovered cards from this set have come directly from someone who either worked for Topps or Xograph. The Tommy Davis and John O'Donoghue proof cards present on this sheet were only recently discovered and brought $30,000+ apiece at auction in June of 2006. Also included on this first sheet is the late great Roberto Clemente, whose card has brought as much as $30,000 itself in the past year. Rounding out the sheet are Jim Maloney, Ron Fairly, Willie Davis, Tony Perez, Ron Swoboda and Bill Robinson. This could very well be a one-time offering, destined to never repeat itself. The uncut sheet itself is in pristine condition, well-preserved with no visible defects.

1957 Topps Baseball PSA-Graded NM-MT 8 Complete Set (411).
An absolutely exceptional set which already ranks as one of the highest in existence. All 407 cards rate PSA NM-MT 8 and the individual who compiled this masterpiece took painstaking measures to acquire only the most well-centered and sharp-cornered cards that he could find. A job well done, as one can easily ascertain by going through the entire set to truly appreciate the time and effort involved in such an accomplishment. In 1957, Topps reduced the size of its cards to the now-familiar 2-1/2" x 3-1/2". In addition, real color photographs were used for the first time. The scarce cards in the set are numbers 265-352. Key cards in the set include #1 Ted Williams, 2 Yogi Berra, 10 Willie Mays, 18 Don Drysdale, 20 Hank Aaron, 25 Whitey Ford, 35 Frank Robinson, 55 Ernie Banks, 76 Roberto Clemente, 95 Mickey Mantle, 170 Duke Snider, 210 Roy Campanella, 286 Bobby Richardson, 302 Sandy Koufax, 312 Tony Kubek, 324 Dodgers Team, 328 Brooks Robinson, 400 Dodgers' Sluggers, 407 Yankee Power Hitters. Also included in this tremendous offering are the difficult checklist cards which rate the following: Checklist 1/2 (NM-MT 8), Checklist 2/3 (EX 5), Checklist 3/4 (EX 5 - MC), Checklist 4/5 (VG-EX - MK).

1933 Goudey Napoleon Lajoie #106 PSA NM 7.
Only the famous Honus Wagner card of the T206 set could claim a more vast divide among card collectors between those who fervently desire a specimen and those that actually own one. Both the T206 Wagner and the 1933 Goudey Lajoie are so exceedingly scarce that listed full set prices for the issues fail to take them into consideration, beaten into submission by the knowledge that the cards just can't be found. Well, we've located one for our Heritage bidding clientele, allowing one lucky customer to switch teams to the "haves" from the "have nots." Thanks must be offered to one young Depression-era set builder, who would not be deterred by the fact that card number 106 was not available in standard wax packs. It took a letter, mailed to the Boston offices of Goudey Gum Co., to earn this toughest of all cards from this Big Three set, accounting for their terrific rarity today. In light of the tiny population of surviving examples, the fantastic condition of the representation found here could almost be considered overkill-certainly this is no card for the casual collector. Consider that 471 examples of the set's second most valuable card, Babe Ruth #53, have been slabbed by PSA, seven times the amount of Lajoies (sixty-seven graded). And with only fifteen rating higher than the offered example, one could safely rank this card among the most desirable of the chewing gum era.

1968 Topps 3-D Baseball Uncut Sheet of 9.
Well-established as one of the true rarities of the modern card era, the 1968 Topps 3-D test issue is among the most sought after and valuable sets from any decade. These attractive cards are extremely rare, produced in miniscule numbers as a test issue that was only distributed to a select few candy stores within walking distance to the Topps Company headquarters. Originally owned by an ex-employee of the Texas based company Xograph, which was contracted by Topps for the production of these high-tech cards, this uncut sheet and the one that follows are believed to be the only known examples to the hobby. Xograph would later go on to produce the popular Kellogg's 3-D sets. It is widely believed that all the discovered cards from this set have come directly from someone who either worked for Topps or Xograph. The Rick Monday and John O'Donoghue proof cards present on this sheet were only recently discovered and brought $30,000+ apiece at auction in June of 2006. Also included on this sheet are the ultra-scarce Boog Powell, Mel Stottlemyre, Jim Longborg, Rusty Staub, Curt Flood, Jim Maloney and Ron Fairly. This could very well be a one-time offering, destined to never repeat itself. The uncut sheet itself is in near pristine condition, with only one visible defect - two 1/2" marks, probably incurred at time of finishing, at the bottom left-hand corner of the Jim Maloney card which sits at bottom left corner of the sheet. This does very little to diminish the overall appeal of this truly collectible item, sure to find its place alongside the true gems of the contemporary sportscard market.

1921 American Caramel Co. Babe Ruth E121 SGC 84 NM 7.
This card is extracted from the scarce American Caramel Series of 80 (E121) set of the same year. Babe, far and away, is the key card in the set. Interestingly, though the caption on front reads "Babe Ruth, R.F. - New York Americans," the photographic image is of the Babe pitching in a Red Sox uniform, an image that would be worth a mint in any vintage format, much less a sports card. Condition is remarkable for a treasure of such advanced age, and in this case, of the twelve submitted cards of the same in the SGC population report; this one stands alone as the highest graded example ever. Here is your chance to get the best!

1910 E93 Standard Caramel Co. Ty Cobb SGC 80 EX/NM 6.
The most valuable card in this ultra-tough thirty card candy issue is presented here for the sophisticated collector, one of only two to achieve an EX/NM 80 ranking with just three charting higher. The rare fielding image finds a jacketed Peach rising against a field of orange, a ball locked in his gloved left hand. Centering, color and registration are immaculate, with just the typical corner touches to account for the score as listed. Surfaces are clean and clear. A magnificent specimen dating from the height of Cobb's considerable powers.

1950-51 Toleteros Joshua Gibson SGC 80 EX/NM 6.
The Toleteros cards are a Puerto Rican issue. This one particularly can be noted for its issuance of a Joshua Gibson card three years after he had died. Perhaps the card company or the Puerto Rican fans felt this was the best display to canonize the man who made such a contribution to their baseball world. After all, more than sixty years later Gibson still holds the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League record with a .480 batting average established in 1941-42. Although the bulk of his career was played in the Negro Leagues, he spent several professional seasons playing there. He was idolized by fans in Puerto Rico and considered his play there as the high point of his career. This is the third best grade specimen found in the SGC population report that has only eleven ever submitted. The image is clear and the centering as perfect as it gets. There is only one noticeable edge ding on the lower left border. The reverse depicts a blank back, unmarred by staining or any other marks.

1950-51 Toleteros Joshua Gibson SGC 60 EX 5.
One can only imagine the life Josh Gibson had in Puerto Rico with the magnitude of a heralded movie star compared to the life he was forced to live in the US, playing in a league designated for the "colored only." He had already established himself as the home run king in the US and continued to set records in the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League system. When the Toleteros company decided to manufacturer a baseball card it is no surprise that Josh Gibson would have to be a part of it, even after he had been deceased for three years. He was idolized by fans in Puerto Rico and considered his play there as the high point of his career. This is the fourth highest grade found in a population report that has only eleven ever submitted. The image is clear and the centering close to perfect. Blank back reverse with no stains, writing or any other marks.

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 SGC 88 NM/MT 8.
The essence of the Depression-era game, distilled into a single three-inch tall slab of cardboard. The details of the offering are little more than a long list of superlatives, as the set, the player it pictures, and the condition of the card specifically all rank at the pinnacle of the hobby. Joining the 1909-11 T206 and 1952 Topps issues to form the baseball card collecting's "Big Three," the 1933 Goudey set is rightfully considered a consummate masterpiece, with gorgeous portraiture capturing many of the greatest names of the pre-war era. And certainly there was none greater than Babe Ruth, who strikes his classic batting pose here on what may be the set's most recognizable card. Brilliant color and flawless registration brings the Babe to life almost three-quarters of a century after issue, and a stunning absence of wear defies all logic. A minor southern shift in centering and the slightest corner touches are all we can report when pressed to find any variation from utter perfection, and it's little surprise that only two representations have ever risen higher on the SGC population charts.

These black-and-white cards share the format and checklist of the much more common Sporting News M101-4 version and many other regional advertisers. 1948-49 Leaf Dom DiMaggio SP #75 PSA NM-MT 8 (1 of 1).
His brother Joe may have gotten the lion's share of the attention back in the 1940's, but today all eyes are on Dominic. There's good reason for this, as we present here the one and only example of his Leaf card to achieve a NM-MT 8 rating. With not a single contender to share or surpass that lofty ranking, this brilliantly colored and flawlessly preserved card will elevate one collection to a level that none other could match. In fact, only seventy of the more than ten thousand cards from the entire issue ever submitted to PSA have achieved a higher score than the offered specimen, providing some degree of insight into just how difficult it is to find Leafs in top condition. One is safe in assuming that this Dom will enjoy his solo reign for quite some time to come.

1934 Goudey Lou Gehrig #37 SGC 88 NM/MT 8.
When it comes to Goudey's celebrated sophomore issue, it just doesn't get much better than this. Not only is this number 37 card, dedicated to the set's Hall of Fame spokesman, the most valuable in the ninety-six card set, but this specific example provides such stunning aesthetics and lack of wear that only three examples have ever charted higher on the SGC population ladder. With colors so brilliant they border on radioactive, super-clean surfaces and wonderfully sharp corners, the Iron Horse looks just like a new hatchling from a 1934 wax pack. One must assume it is only the 60/40 left/right centering that restrains the card from climbing even higher into the hobby's rarified air, as a search for other reasoning comes up empty.

1933 Delong Gum Co. Lou Gehrig #7 SGC 86 NM+ 7.5.
Emerging the same year as the first great Goudey set, the Delong issue likewise deserves recognition as one of the hobby's chewing gum pioneers, though the Delong breed is a great deal tougher to locate. With Babe Ruth absent from the twenty-four card issue, Gehrig stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of value, more than tripling that of the runner-up. Here we present a remarkably strong representation of the Delong set's key card, combining wonderful color and registration with a stunning absence of wear to climb to the upper regions of SGC's population. While three examples have charted higher as of this writing, it is worthy of note that it is imperfect left/right centering rather than issues of wear that accounts for the grade of this card as posted. One could rightfully assume that this matches the few "superior" cards that exist in every other regard, and perhaps even surpasses them. Unquestionably one of the finest examples on earth.

1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig #160 PSA NM-MT 8.
Those wishing to secure a superior example of this highly coveted card are almost assured of disappointment, as only two have ever charted higher in PSA's history. Given the tremendous popularity of this Big Three set, this elite status carries metric tons of weight in the hobby, and we expect feverish bidding upon this lot. This more valuable of the two Gehrig variations in the issue presents the no real opportunity to cast stones. Color and registration are first rate, centering is strong, and the corners are remarkably sharp for the issue. One of the most important 1933 Goudeys to be presented at auction this year.

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #149 SGC 84 NM 7.
This is one of the three bust posed images of Babe Ruth included in the 1933 Goudey set - the most coveted pre-war gum issued set. With the strong possibility of small imperfections in any dark background card, this one exhibits a marred free experience. Also, this example sports a super clean image that could be compared to any high quality card of the same. The only indication that it could not receive a better grading is the centering, which is closer to a 65/35.

1925 Exhibits Lou Gehrig PSA EX 5.
This quite sought after memento is widely considered to be Lou Gehrig's rookie card! This postcard-sized piece, known as an exhibit card, was produced during the Iron Horse's first full season with the New York Yankees. This has a nicely detailed black and white image on the obverse and blank bank reverse, that originally came from an arcade machine. This card has tremendous eye appeal, as it should with its sharp clarity and detail. More good news - there is only one other card that grades higher in the population report.

1889 E.R. Williams Complete Set (52) with Original Box and Playing Equipment.
"EASILY PLAYED, ATTRACTIVE, EXCITING. EVERY PLAY IN THE FIELD GAME SHOWN" These words, printed on the cover box for Egerton R. Williams' Popular In-Door Base-Ball Game, only hint at the visual delights to be found in the set's extraordinary deck of 52 cards. All of the 2-7/16" x 3-1/2" playing cards included in the game, which has also retained its original box, and even its tiny cardboard playing pieces. Baseball symbols garnish their designs, and the legend, "Copyright 1889 - By E.R. Williams," is seen at the cards' center. Nineteen cards each depict a pair of the period's National League or American Association star players, including 10 Hall of Famers. The remainder of the card fronts show crossed bats, along with moves for play, and all have deep green reverses decorated by an at-the-ready batting figure. The beautiful cards have been handled in a few games over 100 years ago and then stored. The game's fascinating roster of player subjects includes: Cap Anson/Buck Ewing (VG-EX), Dan Brouthers/Arlie Latham (EX), Charles Buffinton/Parisian Bob Carruthers (VG-EX), Hick Carpenter/Cliff Carroll (VG-EX), Charles Comiskey/Roger Connor (EX), Pop Corkhill/Jim Fogarty (EX), John Clarkson/Tim Keefe (EX), Jerry Denny/Silent Mike Tiernan (G), Dave Foutz/King Kelly (G), Pud Galvin/Dave Orr (EX), Pebbly Jack Glasscock/Foghorn Tucker (EX), Mike Griffin/Ed McKean (EX), Dummy Hoy/Long John Reiley (VG-EX)), Arthur Irwin/Ned Williamson (VG-EX), Silver King/John Tener (VG-EX), Al Myers/Cub Stricker (G), Fred Pfeffer/Chicken Wolf (VG-EX), Toad Ramsey/Gus Weyhing (G), and Monte Ward/Curt Welch (EX). The 3" x 5" x 1-1/4" box has resolutely protected its valuable contents for more than a century. With its printed Williams logo label still attached to the lid, the box grades Good with two strips of vintage tape used on the inside to keep it stable. Ultra-Rare 1960 Fleer #80 Joe Tinker/Pepper Martin SGC Authentic.
This seldom seen 1960 Fleer Joe Tinker (obverse)/Pepper Martin (reverse) rarity from the 1960 Fleer Baseball issue could only be obtained off of a sheet. This card is a designated as a hand-cut proof card, thus the SGC Authentic grade. Originally, the 1960 Fleer set was supposed to be an 80 card set, but contractual problems with Fleer had eliminated this treasure. However, there were a few sheets that managed to leave the factory and had card number 80, hence their arrival into the market. There were a few different variations to this card, to which the Tinker/Martin has had a total of 3 cards professionally graded. Two of these rarities have been graded by PSA and this was the first by SGC. For many, obtaining card #80 would be extremely difficult, but for some lucky collector, it will make their 1960 Fleer set complete.

1910 E93 Standard Caramel Co. Honus Wagner SGC 70 EX+ 5.5.
From the inception of the National League Wagner dominated. He led the league in hitting eight times, in steals five times, and in slugging average six times. He hit over .300 17 times and would eventually play every position except catcher. He is also high on the all-time stolen-base, triples, and hits lists. After winning the batting title in 1909, he was pitted against the Tigers and Ty Cobb, the AL batting champ, in the 1909 World Series. Wagner didn't want his picture on the now-famous T206 baseball card because the sponsor was a tobacco company, and he didn't want to seem to condone smoking, although he chewed tobacco. The story goes that he sent the tobacco company the money it would have earned from the card, which had already been printed. With the highest-graded Honus Wagner T206 recently skyrocketing up to the $2.8 million plateau it will be curious to see how this affects all the other card issues where he appears. We offer one of the well-known Caramel cards in the business. The color is outstanding and the image and detail exceptional. There are two better examples according to the SGC population report.

1911 E94 Close Candy Sam Crawford PSA NM-MT 8.
The fact that this is one of just two NM-MT 8 examples of this card in existence, and one of just six to achieve this rating from the entire set (none higher!), should give some indication as to the scarcity of this offering. This example, issued by the George Close Candy Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts, offers the desirable checklist back and a stunning absence of wear. Color and registration are phenomenal. Slightly imperfect centering is all that keeps this one from meriting the unprecedented grade of Mint 9. Yes, it's that nice.

1948-49 Leaf Alvin Dark SP #51 PSA NM-MT 8.
Very little opportunity to cast stones at this sharp rookie from the '48 Leaf set. Condition is so stellar, with such little wear to be found, that we must assume it is the slightly imperfect printing process that accounts for this grade not being even higher. Nonetheless, it is notable that only one unqualified card picturing this pennant-winning Boston Brave has ever surpassed our offering.

1948-49 Leaf Leroy Paige SP #8 SGC 50 VG/EX 4.
So what if he was forty-two years old at the time? It's still a rookie card! In fact, considering that his first Bowman card appeared during the second of Leaf's two seasons of issue, one could rightfully consider this Paige's "true" rookie. Satchel cracks a smile above the caption of his rarely spoken given name, as if he's aware just how tough this short-print beauty is. Sports Market Report figures find him more than quadrupling the value of his nearest competitor in this stylish post-war issue. A solid and attractive example of what may well be the toughest debut card of the era.

"I never could stand losing," Cobb once explained. "Second place didn't interest me. I had a fire in my belly." It will take a collector with that same belly fire to step up to the plate for this spectacular offering that ranks near the pinnacle of the SGC population report. The young future hit king poses against a blood red background representing the most valuable of his T206 variations, his image rendered with matchless registration and the boldest of hues. Corners are as sharp as Cobb's terrifying spikes. The Peach was satisfied with nothing but greatness, and you shouldn't be either. Sweet Caporal back.

1969 Topps Milton Bradley Trading Card Game (132).
For years, advanced collectors were aware of color variations on the card backs among 1968 Topps baseball cards. Few, however, were aware of their source. The cards have their origin in a 1969 game from Milton Bradley titled "Win-A-Card," a trading card board game. Included in the game are 132 cards, comprised of the following: 76 1968 Topps Baseball cards, 33 1967 Topps Football cards and 22 1965 Topps Hot Rod cards, plus an instruction card. All of the cards were printed on a single sheet and fortunately for collectors, include not only the Nolan Ryan rookie card and several other Hall of Famers (Brooks Robinson, Tom Seaver, Ed Mathews, Rod Carew, Gaylord Perry, Bob Gibson, Hank Aaron), but also the yellow-team variations of Ed Brinkman and Casey Cox. The football cards also include the set's most expensive card, the 1967 Topps Joe Namath as well as cards for Hall of Famers Nick Buoniconti, Buck Buchanan, Fred Biletnikoff and Ron Mix. The cards all have a background on their reverse sides which is yellow versus the normal orange or gold. As these scarce variations become more widely recognized, it is reasonable to think that the difference in values between the regular-issue cards and the MB game cards will widen significantly. The game is fully intact, and while the box shows some signs of aging including staining; the cards are still sealed in their original state after all these years.

1887 N28 Allen & Ginter Adrian C. Anson Baseball PSA NM 7.
The first member of the 3,000 Hit Club sports a handlebar mustache and a look of determination upon this wonderful Victorian era issue, arguably the most popular of the nineteenth century. Remarkably sharp corners and an overall absence of noteworthy wear merit a grade topped only thirteen times in the history of PSA grading. A marvelous example of the set's most valuable card.

1915 Cracker Jack Tris Speaker #65 PSA NM-MT 8.
Baseball and Cracker Jacks are forever linked by the famous lyrics of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," and by the tremendously desirable trading card issue contained within Cracker Jack packaging during the closing days of the Dead Ball Era. Here we find an astonishingly high-grade example from one of the age's dominant figures. Likely a Mint 9 if not for 60/40 left/right centering, this example is as close to "box fresh" as we've seen. In fact, only two examples have ever charted higher. A Speaker to leave you speechless.

1921 American Caramel Co. Babe Ruth E121 SGC 40 VG 3.
We offer one of Babe Ruth's earlier baseball cards after his trade to the NY Yankees. So early, that the company did not even seek to use a likeness of him in a Yankee uniform. Additionally, this card as opposed to the other we have offered in the same auction is a variation and has the quotes around "Babe." This illustration captures The Babe as a pitcher for his previous team, the Boston Red Sox. Forget the grade here, as the image at first glance is quite receptive. There are usual round corners and wear that is normal for an 80+ year old card. This is the fourth highest graded card from a total submission of nine in the SGC population report.

1963 Topps Baseball Complete Set (576).
This colorful set is best known for containing the Pete Rose's rookie card. Offered here is a visually appealing complete set. A total of 22 cards have been graded by SGC with an aggregate SMR value of $3435. Graded cards -

1948-49 Leaf George Kell SP #120 PSA NM 7.
Slugger George Kell takes to bat in this colorful Leaf presentation. Perhaps it's the somewhat imperfect printing process and the slightest uneven centering that accounts for the NM 7 grade. Regardless, only four other specimens have garnered a better grade.
