Description

1955 Marciano vs. Moore On-Site Boxing Poster. It was a bout that only happened because of Archie Moore's relentless campaign for a shot at the Heavyweight Championship, with tactics ranging from a letter writing campaign to countless sportswriters, paid newspaper advertisements imploring Rocky to give him a shot, and even taunting notes sent to Marciano on the golf course asking, "Are you afraid to fight an old man?" And Moore came about as close as any challenger had managed, knocking Rocky to the canvas in the second round with a perfect right, only the second time Marciano had been taken off his feet. But Rocky would show his tremendous resilience as the fight progressed, finishing the challenger in the ninth round for his final belt defense and immortality as the only undefeated Heavyweight Champ. This scarce cardboard poster once hung at the ballpark where the New York Yankees were closing out another American League Championship season. Masterful restoration has returned the 20x27" relic to its former glory, though scattered wrinkling is evident upon close inspection, only adding to the vintage appeal. One of the most impressive and important fight posters from the 1950's to reach the auction block, for the uncompromising collector of pugiliana.
