1952 Althea Gibson American Tennis Association Nationals Championship Trophy. Althea Gibson didn't just open the door for women in sports, she kicked it open and changed the world. Much like what Jackie Robinson did for African Americans in baseball, Gibson did for young girls who had aspirations of tennis stardom. Since its early days, tennis was a country club sport and dominated by whites. Gibson broke the color barrier in international tennis.The Hall of Famer won eleven Grand Slams and changed her sport so the likes of Serena and Venus Williams and Zina Garrison could make their mark. Gibson also was the first African American to compete, and win, in Wimbledon. Before she dominated the net on a worldwide basis, Gibson was an amateur star. Gibson was presented this award for winning the American Tennis Association Nationals in 1952. The 14" prize sits atop a white plastic base and has the following engraved on the face: "A.T.A. Nationals 1952 Central State College Women's Singles Winner." Oxidation appears throughout the gold cup. The trophy was originally obtained by the man who discovered Gibson - Buddy Walker.
The trophy remained in Walker's possession until his death and was inherited by his daughter. A letter of provenance form Walker's daughter will establish authenticity. We are also including a signed 8x10" from Gibson to our consignor. Letter of provenance from consignor. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from SGC Authentic.
