Description
1978-79 Wayne Gretzky Game Used WHA Rookie Stick. ?In the 1978-79 World Hockey Association (WHA) season, a seventeen-year-old Wayne Gretzky began his professional career with the Indianapolis Racers. After just eight games, his contract was sold to the Edmonton Oilers, where he made an immediate impact. Gretzky played 72 games for the Oilers, scoring 43 goals and providing 61 assists, totaling 104 points. His performance helped lead the Oilers to a first-place finish in the league with a 48-30-2 record. In the playoffs, Gretzky continued to excel, contributing 10 goals and 10 assists in 13 games as the Oilers advanced to the Avco World Trophy Finals, ultimately falling to the Winnipeg Jets. ?This Northland Pro pattern #6961 hockey stick was used by Wayne Gretzky during that notable 1978-79 WHA season as a member of the Edmonton Oilers. Custom-made to Gretzky's specifications, the stick is factory-stamped "GRETZKY" on the shaft, along with his pattern number "6961." It exhibits very nice game use with no cracks or breaks. The original knob tape remains intact and is consistent with Gretzky's sticks from this era; notably, he rarely used blade tape during his rookie WHA season. Gretzky has inscribed his iconic #99 in felt pen just below the knob.
Additionally, one side of the stick has been sanded down to accommodate team signatures, featuring twenty-one autographs including those of coach Glen Sather and players such as Bill Flett (deceased), Bill Goldsworthy (deceased), Cal Sandbeck, Steve Carlson, Eddie Mio, Ron Chipperfield, Dave Langevin, Al Hamilton, Peter Driscoll, Dave Dryden (deceased), Joe Micheletti, Dennis Sobchuk, Garnet "Ace" Bailey (deceased), Blair MacDonald, Stan Weir, Dave Hunter, Wayne Gretzky, John Hughes, and Dave Semenko (deceased).?
This significant piece of hockey history was presented by Oilers assistant general manager Bruce MacGregor to his son, Brad MacGregor, adding a personal provenance to this remarkable collectible.
