Description

1950-51 Cal Gardner Game Worn Toronto Maple Leafs Jersey. It was with the Toronto Maple Leafs that Cal Gardner enjoyed his moment in the sun, skating with enough skill to earn a pair of All-Star appearances and helping his team collect two Stanley Cups. Here we present Gardner's white home sweater from the Leafs' 1950-51 championship campaign. While it is well worn, it remains one of the most desirable and tough Toronto designs. Inner left seam of the garment carries remnants of the Doug Laurie manufacturer's tag. The classic Maple Leafs logo has been embroidered to the chest in a fabulous two-color felt and remains in fine presentational condition. Several moth-eaten holes and stains have ravaged the garment's lower half, a testament not only to the Gardner's on-ice grit but also the terrors of time. Blue-on-white felt "17" has been affixed to the verso of the sweater and remain as aglow as the front identifiers. Two small team repairs can be found in the rear tail. Significant for the Bill Barilko Game 5 Stanley Cup goal that clinched for the Maple Leafs over the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto's '51 championship has an added sentimental twist as Barilko passed away four months later, a victim of a plane crash. Here then, is a beautiful rare sweater worn by one of Barilko's last on-ice comrades. LOA from Rich Ellis.
