Description

1952 Topps Jackie Robinson #312 PSA NM-MT 8. His full name was Jack Roosevelt Robinson but he simply went by "Jackie." One of the most pivotal players in all of sports, Robinson, who was black, made headlines and history when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. With that move, he broke Major League Baseball's longstanding color barrier and opened the doors of opportunity to peers and future generations of deserved players of color. He was nothing short of brave and courageous when the time came to be a hero.

His 10-year career with the Dodgers was nothing short of spectacular. Named the NL Rookie of the Year in '47, he went on to earn NL MVP honors in '49 and led "Dem Bums" to the franchise's first World Series in history in 1955. His lifetime batting average was .313, and his baserunning skills (200 stolen bases) were second to none. His steals home were legendary, much to the chagrin of New York Yankees HOF backstop Yogi Berra.

Offered is Jackie's first Topps card from the company's celebrated 1952 release. A massive set at 407 cards, it was issued in six distinct "series" groups. The Series 6 lineup read like a "Who's Who" of baseball stardom beginning with Mickey Mantle (#311) and followed immediately by Robinson (#312). Jackie's card captures a handsome photo of him in his Dodgers uniform with his preferred choice of lumber leaning against his right shoulder. With the exception of a slight centering pull from left to right, the card is in pristine condition. It exhibits vibrant color, minimal surface wear, milky white borders, four sharp corners, and the reverse is clean. Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Of the more than 1,450 examples evaluated by PSA, this is one of only 44 cards graded NEAR MINT-MINT with just 14 rated higher.
