Description

1950's President Dwight D. Eisenhower Match Used Clubs (12). Many credit the thirty-fourth President of the United States with popularizing the playing of golf within the general public, transforming it from a spectator sport into a participatory one, and beginning a long and proud tradition of the game as the primary hobby of the Commander in Chief. In short, there are few figures in American golf history as important as Ike, and here we present a dozen clubs--four woods and eight irons--used by the President during his two terms in the White House.

The clubs were purchased by our consignor from the family of Gene Stout, head pro at the Augusta National and Eisenhower's personal instructor throughout the 1950's. It is well documented, if not widely known, that Eisenhower actually resided near the tenth tee at the Augusta National during vacations in a structure forever after known as "Mamie's Cabin" in tribute to his wife. These are the clubs he used at America's most famous course.

The high-quality Spalding set exhibits one of the perks of the Presidency, each club head imprinted with Eisenhower's facsimile signature, in tandem with that of the legendary Bobby Jones who endorsed the set and, of course, founded the course that Ike loved.

Five of the clubs include their original head covers, and all show solid use but no damage. Also here is the canceled 1990 check for $10,000 to Stout's widow Evelyn that served as payment for the clubs.
