The early 20th century was a renaissance for tobacco marketing, from which some of the most grandiose trading cards found themselves inserted into packs and boxes of cigarettes and tobacco. Could the American Tobacco Corporation raise the bar with their series of premium sized cabinet cards braggingly titled "Prominent Base Ball Players & Athletes"? To quote Muhammad Ali, "It ain't bragging if you can back it up," and we feel the ATC did just that. Premium sized, premium card stock and the most professional illustrations packed with glorious color, and composition as well as lithographic excellence. Greatness too good for a dark, tobacco smelling box, these cards were requested by name, by the consumer in exchange for 10 or 25 paper coupons and then ordered and received through the mail. Today, these treasured relics are collectively called "T3," thanks to the American Card Catalog. They stand as the most coveted additions to one's collection. This auction features a complete set of all one hundred baseball players, each among the finest state of preservation known in PSA protective holders. While a complete set is out of reach for many, we feel every hobbyist should treat themselves by adding one, two, three or more to their collection. It's not bragging when we say, "You won't be disappointed."
This presentation is for T3 Turkey Red Premium card #49 featuring A Close Play at Second The reverse displays a Checklist for card #'s 1-75 and the standard mail in offer. Graded PSA EX 5. From a total population of fifty-four submissions, this card is one of only eight cards graded EX with just one other rated higher.
