Description

Ultra-rare signed lumber from the Georgia Peach!

1922-25 Ty Cobb Signed Decal Bat, PSA/DNA Authentic. Loved by few, feared by most, but respected by all, Tyrus Raymond Cobb was the Machiavellian ideal of the early game, forging his inaugural Cooperstown bronze in the twin fires of natural ability and gritted-teeth determination. Though Cobb's staggering career hits tally of 4,191 was ultimately eclipsed by perhaps the only other player in history to measure up to Cobb's steep standard for resolve, many batting records remain in the Georgia Peach's sole possession to this day, most notably the .366 career batting average that is as safe as any in baseball.

But even if there was no man more proficient with a bat in his hands, that distinction sadly never bore fruit for the intrepid collectors of pre-war signed bats. Truthfully, the practice was highly unusual in those days, finding Babe Ruth as the only figure to sign bats with any significant regularity. It's likely that fewer than ten bats bearing the signature of the Georgia Peach survive to present day.

This is a particularly intriguing example thereof, the beloved "decal bat" that enjoyed a brief but important popularity in the years spanning the transition from the Dead Ball to Live Ball Era. This one dates to the early years of the latter, as Cobb was securing his place upon the throne as the game's Hit King.

The thick-handled Hillerich & Bradsby 40 T.C. exhibits solid game wear prior to its encounter with the first member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, wearing away about half of the surface area of the "Georgia Peach" decal version that adorns the barrel. But, of course, it is the bold black fountain pen ink signature just to the left that turns this lumber legendary, the autograph surviving with astounding 8/10 strength.

Bat measures thirty-five and a quarter inches (35.25") and weighs thirty-eight ounces (38 oz.). Handle is uncracked. LOA from PSA/DNA, Authentic. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
