Description

From the Cincinnati Reds' National League Championship season!

1970 Pete Rose Gold Glove Award. When donning the sport's most illustrious crown as the all-time Hit King, it's little surprise that the defensive half of one's game would fall beneath that immense shadow. But Charlie's hustle wasn't reserved only for the basepaths, and Rose was twice able to earn the game's premier defensive prize during an extraordinarily competitive age in the National League outfield when Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente and Curt Flood dominated as perennial honorees.

This is the second of those two Gold Gloves, a gleaming symbol of excellence bearing the same vintage as the ring issued to Rose for his contributions to the first National League Championship of his career. Rose was a single error from perfect in right field for the 1970 season (fielding average .997), notching seven assists.

The design of the award should be instantly recognizable, the eponymous Gold Glove rising from the center pedestal, stamped with the insignia of the "Rawlings" award sponsor, framed by twin golden baseballs. A photographic image of a young Rose appears at center, above an engraved plaque on the base that reports, "1970, OF - Pete Rose - 2nd Award, The Sporting News, National League All-Star Fielding Team." Condition is stronger than most contemporary Gold Gloves we've seen, with a few minor, scattered dents apparent upon examination, but nothing that draws the eye upon standard display. A truly important piece from a true baseball immortal, Cooperstown or not.
