Description

Circa 1908 Reading (PA) Tristate Club Cabinet Photograph with Frank Baker from the Frank "Home Run" Baker Collection. UPDATE: Please note that it has been suggested by a top Frank Baker expert and biographer that this photo is, in fact, an earlier and even more scarce and valuable image of Baker with the 1905 Ridgely, Maryland baseball team. The earliest known baseball photograph of this Hall of Fame immortal pictures the young infielder at center of a fantastic team shot snapped shortly before Baker left Reading for Connie Mack's Philadelphia squad. The Old English letter "R" appears over each player's heart, and fantastic period bats, gloves and baseballs dot the foreground. Though the crystal-clear image leaves no question as to Baker's identity, an included scrapbook that mistakenly lists the third baseman from Trappe, Maryland as "Freddie Baker" sings the praises of this talented Reading star. And, of course, the fact that this image derives directly from the collection of Baker himself should establish the provenance to the satisfaction of all. The sepia-toned image, measuring 7x9" in size, and the cardboard mount to which it is attached (11x13"), remain in spectacular NRMT condition, suggesting that this was one of Baker's most prized photos. Only a small handful of Dead Ball Hall of Famer photographs predating ascension to the Major Leagues have ever surfaced in the hobby, making this a true treasure for the advanced collector.
