Description

Circa 1910 Battling Nelson vs. Ad Wolgast Fight Film Poster. The early century elegance of this gorgeously lithographed poster belies the shocking brutality of the forty-round bloodfest it advertises, a bout in which Boxing Hall of Famer Nelson received, in the words of one newspaper account of the day, "a beating such as old-time ring followers maintain never before was seen in the ring." While Nelson went to his grave maintaining that he was still the reigning lightweight champion because the referee had never actually counted him out in the Wolgast fight, few disputed the wisdom of the referee's stoppage when Nelson, rendered blind by the fierce pummelling of Wolgast, took a fighting stance opposite one of the ring posts. This 28x42" poster for the fight film is unquestionably the finest of the tiny supply that could still exist today, linen-backed to present in stunning NRMT-MT condition. A magnificent piece of early pugilistica.
