Description

1909 Johnson vs. Kaufman Full Ticket. On September 9, 1909, World Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson successfully defended his title by defeating challenger Al Kaufman by a ten round decision in San Francisco. This was Johnson's first defense of the title that he had won from Tommy Burns in Australia nine months earlier. Kaufman represented the first in a long line of "Great White Hopes" who would succumb to the talents of the great African American champion. Presented here is an extremely rare, full official ticket to this event. The ticket measures 2.5x6.5" and features the names of both fighters printed on the front and the promoter's name, James Coffroth, on the reverse. The front is relatively clean with slightly rounded corners. The back has some scuffing with a minor amount of surface paper loss. This ticket is the only known example and may be unique. LOA from Craig Hamilton / JO Sports.
