Description

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 PSA Poor 1. The 1952 Topps card featuring New York Yankees superstar center fielder Mickey Mantle is easily the most talked-about and recognizable gum card of the postwar era. Showcasing the Hall of Famer with his trusty bat leaning on his right shoulder, it captures "The Mick" in his early days as a Bronx Bomber. He was embarking on what turned into a Cooperstown-worthy career, one that would include three AL MVP awards, (1956, '57 and '62), one very elusive Triple Crown (also in '56), 12 American League pennants and seven World Series championships.

The 1952 Topps Baseball series was the largest of its day (407 cards) and its card measurements were large as well (2.5" wide by 3.5" high). As it turned out, Topps management realized late in the '52 season that their "High Number" cards (#s 311 to 407) would never reach their channels of distribution in time for the close of the MLB season. Though limited quantities were sent to stores in the northeastern U.S. and parts of Canada, the final decision on what to do with the balance of the unsellable cards is believed to have been a deep-sea trip out on a barge several miles offshore, where the excess cardboard was dumped.

The offered example of card #311, one that was spared from a death by drowning, is found in lower-grade condition with paper loss showing on three of the four corners and off-center printing. Regardless, this is the card that collectors still talk about and would make for a great conversation piece in anyone's vintage card collection. Graded PSA Poor 1.
