Description
1888 G3 Allen & Ginter "Birds of America" (N4) Tobacco Banner. "SALE!" How sad that in 2025 that one word on a store sign is enough to grab a buyers attention and dollars. You'll have to admit that 19th century shoppers were far more sophisticated or at least new to the concept of marketing. Wall space would have been at a premium with shopkeepers gladly putting up gorgeous banners such as this advertising another new marketing enticement - series after series of beautifully produced cards which certainly added to dad's pressure from kids to make sure they acquired every card in a series. These rare banners acted as the highest quality checklists in trading card history. Produced by Allen & Ginter for their "Birds of America" series in 1888, this approximately13" x 20" vision depicts all 50 cards (as was the style) for the series we know as "N4" as listed in Burdick's American Card Catalog. A stunningly detailed and lithographed bald eagle is propped majestically atop the fifty-card base with a silhouette of our nation's capital, both revered symbols of our great country. It's almost as if they wanted to plant the ideas that smoking A&G's "Richmond Straight Cut No. 1 and Virginia Brights Cigarettes" is downright patriotic! Printed by Geo. S. Harris & Sons Phila., New York & Chicago. These posters were needed for only short periods and not intended to be kept. You would never guess that based on the level of quality. Our condition reports includes notes regarding some creasing and a wabbling of the fragile paper stock now professionally mounted. In a strict sense it is not in high grade but with just a few known, we can with some certainly say it presents as the finest example extant. The all-important colors are still vivid, and bright despite its 150th anniversary. A fantastic addition to your collection room or for your get-away cabin in the woods. Professionally framed and matted under Plexi-glass. Overall dimensions are 18-1/2" x 35."Guide Value or Estimate: $2,500 - up.
