Description

C. 1889 Allen & Ginter "Richmond Straight Cut Cigarettes" Metal Advertising Serving Tray with "Old Planter." A major reason for the growth of the tobacco industry was due to the pioneering marketing efforts employed by the Allen & Ginter Co. of Richmond, Virginia. They are credited with many of the most popular inserts card promotions of which we all have a debt of gratitude. They were one of the first to establish a "face" or a namesake in their advertising. It was a concept that did not take long to include the use of celebrity endorsements. Depictions of the "Old Planter" date back to a Rufus Porter advertisement from 1849 but it's usage and familiarity was at its peak in the 1880's. The smoking portrait is found on multiple items, like his N33 "World's Smokers" card, store signs, print ads and this very rare serving tray. He has been identified as Joseph Ducreux who was a portrait painter for the French royal family. This large (19 inches, round) is just one relic boasting his wonderfully moody image that oozes mystery, espionage and the kind of man who has lived a life other men can only dream of and is now relaxing with his favorite smoke. "Richmond Cross Cut Cigarettes" is clearly emblazing around the raised perimeter with a familiar "20 for 15-cents" pricing. Display it as a base for your Allen & Ginter cards and packs or use the simple, white string hanger (not original) to hang on a wall. It is a guaranteed conversation starter. There are signs of metal oxidation and surface wear. Evidence of restoration include multiple, but not excessive, areas of color inpainting. The largest being the organic shape that starts on his hand and trails upward like a puff of smoke. Terrific presentation qualities.
