Description

1951-53 Sid Finney/Jim Peters Game Worn Jersey. Outstanding example is presented here of the famed Chicago Black Hawks "barber pole" wool, which is regarded among collectors as one of the best NHL jerseys ever made. Used by the team from the late 1930s until the 1950s, this style always causes quite a stir among those in the know. Dating from 1951-53, this particular gamer dons the number 14 and was worn by at least two different players during that era. While the sweater is attributed to both Sid Finney and Jim Peters, others including Fred Hucul and Fred Glover also wore the number 14 during the early 1950s. A struggling team at the time, it is understandable that a veritable parade of players were shuffling in and out of Chicago.

As stated earlier, this extremely desirable design comes with quite a premium, especially considering that it has been some time since a quality barber pole has been made available at auction. The given exemplar does not disappoint with the beautiful logo crest at the chest exhibiting superb French-embroidered detailing. Heavy repair marks pepper the sweater throughout, especially in the sleeves, while several team repairs are also found throughout the garment's body. The "14" at verso is made up of a white-on-red tackle twill with nice signs of puckering. The gamer has a Rayson Sports tag along with a size 48 swatch in the tail. A 2.5x5.5" rectangle has also been cut out from the inner part of the rear tail.

When contemplating the history of vintage wool hockey shirts, the Black Hawks barber pole style is considered a timeless classic on par with the New York Yankees pinstripes from baseball lore. We could think of no finer prize for the serious hockey collector. To honor this great garment, the Blackhawks will wear this style jersey for a few games during the upcoming 2008-09 NHL season, including the outdoor Winter Classic game scheduled to be played at Chicago's Wrigley field against the Detroit Red Wings. This New Year's Day event can do nothing but place this fine design in the public spotlight after they have not been used on-ice since the 1993-94 season. LOA from MeiGray.
