Description

1953-54 Earl "Jug" Girard Game Worn Helmet. One of the earliest known N.F.L. game worn helmets to be offered at public auction. This representation is vintage Lions, with its 1950's simplicity and its umpteen coats of silver paint. The "MacGregor" made helmet has a combination leather/canvas eight-point suspension, with a leather crown donut on which the model number "6440, [size] 7 1/8" is imprinted. The side and back padding is all leather and silver overspray is in abundance. Over the right ear hole is an oversized "R23" in bold silver paint, identifying Girard's jersey number. The finishing touch to this 1950's gem is the presence of two "MacGregor" cream single bar facemasks bolted together to form a two-bar without vertical stems, the forerunner to Riddell's BD-9 gray two-bar. Girard was a two-way halfback punter from Wisconsin who played ten years in the N.F.L., predominantly with the Lions but also in Green Bay and Pittsburgh. Obtained directly from a former Lions employee. LOA from Lou Lampson.
