Description
1970 Paul Krause Game Worn Minnesota Vikings Super Bowl IV Jersey. During the 1969 regular season en route to a Super Bowl appearance in New Orleans versus the AFL Champion Kansas City Chiefs, the Vikings road jerseys sported the NFL 50th anniversary patch under the numerals on the left sleeve. To make the anniversary patch more visually prominent for the Super Bowl game, the Vikings moved the patch to the left shoulder. This Paul Krause heavy knit offering never had the 50th patch below the left sleeve numerals, so the presumption is it was a new jersey patched on the shoulder for "the Big Game." The level of wear bears this out - no repairs but red and black transfers from the Chiefs helmets are on the front right shoulder and faint green staining from field paint is visible on the back right sleeve and mid right back. The screened-on numerals show minor surface wear. The lower left front tail sports dual "Sand Knit" labels - the local distributor "Kokesh" label and "[size] 44" tags. Both are straight stitch affixed and match exemplars.
It should also be noted that the Vikings wore two different numeral font styles during the 1969 season, and this jersey sports the thinner sleeve number style worn by Krause in the Super Bowl, and differs from the thicker style worn by the All Pro safety during the regular season. A great jersey sourced from the Hall of Famer and Minnesota legend. Letter of provenance from Paul Krause. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
The Collection of Pro Football Hall of Famer Paul Krause
Paul Krause's gridiron brilliance started as a two-way star at the University of Iowa, where he possessed all-around talent as the Hawkeyes' standout wide receiver and defensive back. In addition, Krause also played collegiate baseball, where he earned All-American honors and was drafted into the Major Leagues. After he injured his shoulder during his junior year, Krause opted to stick with football, and in 1964 he was drafted in the second round by the Washington Redskins.
While playing in the nation's capital during his rookie year, Krause led the NFL in interceptions with twelve, including interceptions in seven straight games. His defensive dominance continued, as he intercepted a total of twenty-eight passes in his first four seasons with the Redskins. In 1968, the Flint, Michigan native was traded to the Minnesota Vikings, with whom he would appear in three Super Bowls and six Pro Bowls.
The NFL's all-time leader in interceptions with eighty-one, Krause is enshrined in both the Vikings Ring of Honor, and as a member of the Redskins' 70th Anniversary Team. In 1998 he claimed the sport's greatest honor when he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Heritage Auctions is proud to present the following lots from The Paul Krause Collection, an array of artifacts that were proudly displayed in his St. Paul, Minnesota residence until now. Each lot will be accompanied by a letter of provenance from Mr. Krause.
