Description
1909 Hughie Jennings Single Signed Game Used Baseball. Deeply toned orb derives from the personal collection of the Hall of Fame Detroit Tigers player/manager best remembered today for his cries of "Ee-yah!" and wild gesticulations in the third base coaching box. The black fountain pen writing on the ball, enhanced in later years to a boldness of 10/10, is a bit inscrutable, though it would appear that the ball saw action in the game in which Detroit secured the American League pennant with a victory over the Boston Red Sox, quite possibly the last out ball from that game. But while Jennings mentions the words Boston, Pennant (twice) and Ball in game, the September date he supplies does not match with any Tigers meeting with Boston. Jennings twice dedicates the ball to "Nellis," his mistress. Ball is coated with shellac, accounting for its deep toning, and exhibits a small mounting hole at the blue and red stitching. The OAL stamping has been lost to the passage of time. While the correct date of the Tigers' pennant-clinching victory over the Red Sox is October 1st, it would still stand to reason that this is a ball from that game, simply misdated by the Hall of Fame Tiger. And while the ball has been entirely traced over, its status as a spectacularly rare Jennings single signed orb only adds to the enormous appeal. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication (noting tracing).
