Description

1924 Harry Heilmann & Dave Bancroft Game Used & Sidewritten Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8. Extraordinary rarity links a pair of Golden Age Hall of Famers whose friendship resulted in one of the most remarkable sidewritten bats we've offered here at Heritage. The presented Harry Heilmann signature model Hillerich & Bradsby, we must advise, cannot be definitively be assigned use by the Detroit Tigers outfielder but it was most certainly produced for and delivered to him as part a May 5, 1922 order. The thirty-four-inch (34") length and thirty-six and a half ounce (36.4 oz.) weight perfectly matches that order, and the center brand is correct for that order as well.

But we know that the bat made it to his buddy Dave Bancroft at some point during the season of 1924 due to the sidewriting applied at the Louisville factory that reads, "#7 37oz. Dave.Bancroft 12-11-24" in black grease pencil. For the few reading this who might not be aware, this sidewriting indicates that Bancroft shipped this bat to Hillerich & Bradsby for duplication, meaning Bancroft used and loved this particular format and thus wanted more of its kind.

The game use evident on the bat is characterized as "outstanding," with ball marks coating the barrel. The uncracked handle and December return date suggests this bat very likely carried Bancroft through the end of the 1924 season, his first with the Boston Braves after a long term of service to the New York Giants. The PSA/DNA letter discusses the outrageous rarity of this relic, noting it is just the second bat attributable to Bancroft that the service has ever authenticated. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8.
