Description

1858 Pioneer Base Ball Club Medal NGC MS 63 BN. One of the earliest baseball artifacts you'll encounter, actually predating the start of the American Civil War. The medal, about the size of a half dollar and perhaps twice as thick, was minted by the "Pioneer Base Ball Club," whose name is imprinted on the obverse with a wonderful image of a period batsman. Verso reads, "Organized Aril 30, 1858, Play Ground on Hamden Park, Springfield, Mass." Given the strong coin clientele here at Heritage, we expect a real battle between 19th century baseball collectors and those whose affections are more numismatic in nature.
