Description

1835 Sports of Youth Miniature Book with Page about Baseball. Tiny (2x3") and delicate little volume is crafted from handmade paper with a hand-sewn spine, providing charming little images and brief text about various childhood sporting endeavors. Most notable is the entry on page six, picturing a batsman at the ready and a pitcher about to deliver an underhanded throw. The text reads, "Ah! this is my favorite game. This is an excellent amusement for boys. How eager all the little fellows appear. One of them stands ready to toss the ball, --one to knock it, and two to run after it, if they fail to catch it." The book, printed in Yale University's hometown of New Haven, Connecticut in 1835, exhibits a degree of wear and soiling which should be evident in the catalog imagery, but it still presents very nicely. The remarkably early baseball reference makes this one of the oldest artifacts of our National Pastime in the hobby.
