Description

1896 Athens Summer Olympics Gold Participation Medal. Believed to have been gifted to prominent officials and elite athletes from this historic Olympiad, the offered medal is comprised of a special gilded bronze. Its magnificent design is identical to the solid bronze participation medal presented to every competitor in these first modern Olympic Games. This important medal is exponentially scarcer and more significant than its solid bronze counterpart. Beautifully preserved, the surfaces of this gem are original and lustrous as struck, well over a century ago. Brilliant, proof-like fields enhance the medal's captivating artistry that is showcased throughout. Weight is 58.3 grams. Bottom front stamped "N. Lytras W.P." and bottom back stamped "W. Pittner Wien."
