Description

Circa 1910 Frank Chance Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 6. He was scouted by the National League representative of the Windy City while playing semi-professional ball during college and got his Major League start as a member of the 1898 Chicago Orphans, a team that would rebrand as the Cubs in 1903, the same year that Chance became the starting first baseman. Chance would succeed Frank Selee as the team's manager in 1905 and marshal the team to four National League pennants and two World Championships between 1906 and 1910, earning the nickname "The Peerless Leader." He still holds the highest managerial winning percentage in franchise history.

The presented Spalding "Gold Medal Autograph" model is one of the few known Frank Chance game used bats, the model number, length and weight specifications have been confirmed by the manufacturer's catalogs as being ordered by the player during the labeling period.

Chance played during the Deadball Era when the length of the bats was secondary to the weight, and he wielded one of the heaviest bats on record. This is a mammoth tool relative to modern examples, measuring 34.75" in length and tipping the scales at over 40.1 ounces. The experts at PSA/DNA characterize game use as "heavy," assuring this bat was no wallflower, and referencing many ball marks visible on all sides of the barrel, checking on the back barrel, and cleat marks on the front barrel. Furthermore, there is a string attached through the handle that was used to hang the bat.

Let's be frank--this is very likely your only chance to own one of the toughest twentieth century Hall of Famer bats in the hobby. And lest you mistake this important war club for a retail model, leading bat expert John Taube reminds us that during the era Spalding "Gold Medal Autograph" series bats and "Autograph Series" bats were undoubtedly used by players at the Major League level. This fact has been confirmed by vintage photography and the appearance of these bats in the vault at Louisville Slugger, Inc. These bats were used by players and then returned to LVS to have bats of the same model produced. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 6 (1B37721).
