Description

1985 Jose Canseco Game Used & Signed Rookie Bat Attributed to His 1st Career Home Run, PSA/DNA GU 9. Jose Canseco, had it all. Power, speed and bravado. He was baseball's first 40-40 (home runs and steals) man and, over his career, he averaged forty homers, 120 RBI and 102 runs every 162 games. He was the game's most complete player (1988 A.L. MVP) and he played on two championship teams (1989 and 2000).

The presented Canseco gamer is a Worth model number WC115 which measures 35.0 inches in length and weighs 33.3 ounces. It exhibits evidence of outstanding use, including a cracked handle (secured with tape), ball marks, blue ink transfers, blue/green bat rack streaks and a moderate coat of pine tar on the handle. "JC 5 WC115" is stamped on the knob. Also, Canseco's "33" appear on the knob and top barrel in vintage black marker.

Canseco signed the bat three times and added the inscription "86 AL ROY, 88 AL MVP, 89 WS Champs, Mr. 40-40" in bold black sharpie. Note: There is some black ink smudging caused by Canseco when signing the bat to the right of the inscription.

In video evidence taken by our consignor at autograph show, Canseco is shown signing and inscribing the presented bat. You can even see when Canseco smudged the original "Mr. 40-40" inscription and redid it.

Later in the video, the slugger clearly confirms that this was the bat he used to hit his first Major League home run off Jeff Russell of the Texas Rangers at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on September 9, 1985.

Canseco: "First, let me check if it's a gamer. [Canseco examines the bat]. Yes it is. Actually, I have a video, which I can show you right now that, with this bat [Canseco points to the bat], I hit a ball 600 feet...When I first came up in September, at the Oakland Coliseum. [Canseco searches for the video on his cell phone]. I hit a ball to right-center, with this bat...You will be in shocked how far this baseball travels...No one has ever seen me hit a baseball this far...No one has ever come close. That bat [points to the bat] did that. [Canseco finds the video on his phone and then shows our consignor]. All right, here it is. That's the bat, right there. Watch where that ball lands...That's the Oakland Coliseum at night time where the ball went nowhere...Look at where it landed by the concession stand [Canseco points at the video]. No one has even come close. That bat did that [Canseco points to the bat]. That's 600 feet."

In the title of the PSA/DNA letter of grading and authenticity, bat expert John Taube states that the bat was attributed by Canseco to his first career home run on 9/9/85. Later, he notes that "In September of 1985, Canseco homered in two night games at the "O," September 9th against the Rangers and September 26th against the White Sox. He did not strike out in the December 26th game and the home run on September 9th was his first as a Major Leaguer."

Based on the video of Canseco in which he states that he hit the home run and struck out during a game in September 1985, and based on the PSA/DNA letter, the bat can be attributed to his first career home run.
