Autographed for a former Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives with family provenance.
Circa 1940 Cy Young Single Signed Baseball to Prominent Ohio
Politician, PSA/DNA EX-MT+ 6.5.Update: This baseball was originally consigned by Freeman Eagleson. It does have a letter of provenance from Eagleson from auction 7115.
The man whose name is synonymous with pitching excellence ranks right up there with Ruth and Cobb in terms of hobby essentials, but his singles are tougher to find than either of his inaugural Hall of Fame classmates' as Young spent his retirement in much greater seclusion on an Ohio farm. This important solo sphere was originally consigned to us by an Ohio attorney named Freeman Eagleson III, namesake of Freeman T. Eagleson, Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1907-08.
The medium is an Official National League baseball from the presidency of Ford Frick, its unique stamping characteristics placing the signing between 1936 and 1940. Young's distinctive childlike script personalizes the ball simply, "Eagleson from Cy Young" on the sphere's side panel. Young's blue fountain pen ink has mellowed to a green but still bold, and the ball itself presents very well without any of the foxing or other condition flaws commonly seen in pre-war horsehide. PSA/DNA graded the autograph 6 and the baseball 7 with a cumulative grade of 6.5. A fine representation from one of the most iconic figures of our National Pastime.
