Named the top goalie of the 1960 Squaw Valley Games!

1960 Jack McCartan Game Worn USA Olympic Hockey Team Jersey with Player Letter. Much like the team that skated to glory in 1980, the 1960 American hockey team faced their toughest challenge prior to the final contest that earned Olympic Gold. Though the "Miracle on Ice" is well deserving of its widely accepted status as the greatest day in the history of American sports, the path to the top of the podium for the 1960 team had been no less improbable, and arguably even more fraught with peril.

At the start of the tournament, four teams were considered the heavy favorites for the podium--Canada, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Sweden--and the Americans were spared meetings with none of them. Canada and the USSR had claimed seven of the previous eight Olympic Gold Medals as they entered the 1960 Games, and few doubted the trend would continue at Squaw Valley.

But in a frenetically paced tournament that saw the Americans play seven games in ten days, the underdogs shocked the world again and again, wearing this white jersey format to victory in the Gold Medal finale against Czechoslovakia. It is consigned to auction by the team's heroic goalie, Mr. McCartan himself, along with his Gold Medal and various other related items in this Platinum Night auction.

The garment is a classic beauty, crafted from white wool/nylon blend with a laced collar and red and white striping at hips and biceps. "USA" stair-steps down the chest in red and white tackle twill, with a patriotic Olympic crest over the heart. McCartan's number "2" adorns each shoulder and the reverse. "Gerry Cosby [size] 48" tagging is affixed at lower rear interior tail. Condition is remarkably strong for a hockey sweater of this advanced vintage, with just a few holes near front waist that appear to be battle scars. Letter of provenance from Jack McCartan. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
