1961 Harmon Killebrew Game Worn Minnesota Twins Jersey, SGC Superior. It was a season immortalized by the home run exploits of the M&M Boys in the Bronx, but several hundred miles to the west this future Hall of Famer was having the best season of his young career so far, finishing third behind Mantle and Maris with forty-six home runs (breaking the franchise record) and a career-best .288 batting average and 1.012 OPS. Let's also remember that 1961 was the first year for the former Washington Senators in their new home, with Killer named as team captain by manager Cookie Lavagetto.

So this road grey flannel jersey recalls a particularly significant season in the joint histories of the Minnesota Twins and their most popular representative, and the game use is wonderfully strong. "Twins" spans the chest in two-tone tackle twill script, with number "3" taking up residence on verso in the same material. Left sleeve is factory-cropped as per the preference of top sluggers of the day, and it retains the charming team logo patch. An embroidered "Killebrew" swatch is sewn at interior collar. Lower left front tail bears "Spalding [size] 44" labeling above "Killebrew 3 44 61" embroidered directly into jersey body. Flip the tail over to reveal washing instructions label. A few pinhead-sized moth holes appear at rear left shoulder and collar, but the effect is so minimal that it barely deserves a mention.

Our consignor's father was director of a paper supply company in Minneapolis and generously took his staff to the Twins inaugural home opener to see history being made. As it happened, one of his staffers had a son who got the enviable job of bat boy with the new team and received this jersey from Killebrew in thanks for his service. Some time later, knowing what a big Twins fan his boss was, the staffer gifted this jersey to his boss in the early to mid-1960's. LOA from SGC, Superior. Letter of provenance from consignor. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
