Description
With letter of provenance from Tommy Byrne, Jr.!
1949 New York Yankees World Championship Ring Presented to
Pitcher Tommy Byrne. Despite posting just a single winning
season in eight years of Big League managerial service, Casey
Stengel earned the role of skipper of the New York Yankees in 1949
amidst the loud protestations of local sportswriters and fans
alike. Come October, however, all Bronx faithful were singing a
much different tune, as the Ol' Perfesser led the club to its first
of five consecutive World Championship crowns. This is the symbol of the start of that greatest streak of dominance in Major League history, a wonderfully dignified memento featuring a genuine and figural baseball diamond on the face, encircled by that historic text: "New York Yankees World Champions." Each shank bears "1949" vintage above the classic hat and bat Yankees logo.
The recipient of this historic relic was southpaw ace Tommy Byrne, who went 15-7 that year to earn his sole All-Star Game appearance and started Game Three of the 1949 World Series against Brooklyn Dodgers icon Ralph Branca. Byrne pitched three scoreless innings before he surrendered a solo shot homer to Pee Wee Reese and then allowed the Bums to load the bases in the fourth, sending Stengel to the Ebbets Field bullpen phone to call up Joe Page, who would finish out the game as a winner in relief. Byrne would ultimately serve eleven seasons in pinstripes, going 85-69 with a 4.11 ERA.
While most championship rings of this era have seen their markings worn down over the passage of decades, this gorgeous specimen presents in glorious NRMT condition, clearly only worn on special occasions, if that. Interior band measures to a size eleven and a half (11.5) and is engraved "Thomas Byrne" and stamped "Balfour 10K." The ultra-rare original wood and leather presentation box is torn at the hinge but otherwise complete. Letter of provenance from son of Tommy Byrne.
